KIDS BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

As a child grows and develops, their needs and ability to learn changes.  To address this, we offer these three well-established programs.

Overview

Apex has three outstanding Jiu-Jitsu programs that address the needs of the junior practitioner: Eaglets, Junior Eagles, and Fundamentals 1.

We set out from the very beginning to address the issues specific to juniors, and not just replicate a purely adult program. Kids just need more attention to the soft skills: respect, drive, attitude, and discipline. Combined with technique and skill, we've crafted the kids programs to teach respect, build strong team spirit and nurture great individual talent.

The results to date, as evidenced by our tournament results and parents’ feedback, have been outstanding. We have been the top kids BJJ program in all BC for many years, and encouraged by our success, we continue to refine and evolve our junior programs. Our goal is nothing less than to nurture champions - champions in skill and character. We dare to dream big... and so do our kids!

Eaglets
Ages 4-7

Our beginner Jiu Jitsu class for kids. In this program, children are introduced to the art in a safe and fun way - with exercises, drills, and techniques taught within games and play activities. Discipline is expected and reinforced, but it’s about having fun, and getting comfortable with the activity of training Jiu Jitsu.

Junior Eagles
Ages 8-14

The Apex Junior Eagles is our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is for students new beginners as well as graduates of the Eaglets program. Although structured more like an adult program class, the Junior Eagles class is still taught with the developmental needs of the younger Jiu Jitsu student in mind. There is focus on technique, discipline, and character development… but we still play group games on a regular basis, to keep things fun!

Here's what makes the Junior Eagles so unique: We have a deep respect for the ability of our kids to learn. We don't water down the technique because they're kids, we give it to them straight, as they're ready to learn it – which is often faster than the adults! We describe our style of teaching Jiu Jitsu to Juniors, relative to other clubs, as “technical".

Our teaching is detailed, and the kids love it because it works. We teach them to dissect and analyze matches. Kids coach and even referee matches to further refine their understanding of the game. This helps in their general critical-thinking development.

But knowing is different from doing… which is why drills are so important. We continually develop and test new drills for our program that are fun, build skills, and work conditioning.

Sparring is a big part of our program, and the kids love it. We have some of the top Jiu Jitsu athletes in the province, and some have even won medals at the PAN Kids Jiu Jitsu tournament, regarded as one of the top three BJJ competitions in the world.

We integrate respect into all aspects of our training. It's essential to nurture a positive and healthy attitude, and the right attitude is what champions are made of. Sometimes kids arrive with "attitude issues", but after a short time with our program we manage to rediscover the enthusiastic, hardworking team member within.

Fundamentals 1
Ages 14+

Fundamentals 1 is our teenage and adult program that is suitable for all levels. It is focused on the foundational techniques necessary to apply Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in a real self-defence situation. Different from sport-focused programs, the material covered in Apex’s Fundamentals 1 is a set of 36 lessons of techniques & strategies designed to enable the student to defend him/herself against a stronger, larger opponent in a “street” or “schoolyard” situation. We feel this is an essential life-skill for teenagers, and training in this program will do wonders for their general self-confidence, and ability to deter bullies.

Competition
All Ages

We believe competition is an essential component for developing the mental and physical attributes of children. We encourage regular competitions big and small, and we organize informal, “friendly" inter-club exchange tournaments, to keep our athletes sharp. Competition is not mandatory, but we keep it fun and just challenging enough that most wind up wanting to compete. Winning and losing are big lessons to learn, and they're both essential to building character.
